5 Breakfast Habits That Are Ruining Your Health

Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. Morning is the best time for our body to absorb nutrients. But do you know that there are some breakfast habits that can harm your health?

Let’s know about those 5 breakfast habits that you can change immediately:

1. Consumption of White Bread

White bread has become a common part of breakfast in Indian homes today. Even brown bread is made of maida with a little flour added. Actual bread has just 4 ingredients, while market bread contains more than a dozen chemicals.

Better options:

  • Make fresh bread at home
  • Buy fresh bread from a trusted bakery
  • Eat roti
  • Eat barley or ragi roti

2. Packaged Muesli

Muesli is considered healthy, but packaged muesli is full of refined flour, sugar, and artificial flavours. 100 grams of muesli contains only 6.4 grams of fibre, while regular oats contain more than 10 grams of fibre.

Healthier options:

  • Eat plain oats
  • Choose millet or ragi flakes
  • Make your own muesli mix at home

3. Ready-to-Eat Breakfast

Ready-to-eat breakfast is becoming very popular in urban India these days. But they use highly refined grains. A 60-gram poha packet contains only 1.5 grams of fibre.

Better options:

  • Make fresh poha or upma
  • Add fresh vegetables to plain oats
  • Eat fresh fruits like bananas

4. Nutella and Jam

Nutella contains 55% sugar and hazelnuts only 13%. Fruit jams also contain 15 teaspoons of sugar per 100 grams.

Healthier options:

  • Use homemade jam
  • Eat fresh fruits
  • Use peanut or almond butter

5. Fried Snacks

Fried snacks like chole bhature or kachori slow down metabolism. Reheating oil again and again leads to the formation of trans fats which can cause heart diseases.

Healthy options:

  • Boiled chickpeas
  • Idli or dosa
  • Daliya or poha

Important Tips for a Healthy Breakfast

  • Choose whole grains
  • Include fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Add nuts and seeds to breakfast
  • Prefer traditional dishes of your region
  • Choose fiber-rich foods

A healthy breakfast can energise you for the rest of your day. Avoid processed and packaged foods and opt for fresh, nutritious food. Remember, a good breakfast should not just be tasty but also nutritious. You are what you eat – so make your breakfast healthy and enjoy a healthy life.
